Raven Ramblers - Walk 3

This is a 4.5 miles (7km) circular walk and is largely through open countryside passing many farms en route. It includes a railway crossing, where extreme care should be taken due to the possibility of fast moving trains.

Park on the Raven Inn car park,

Warrington Road, Glazebury WA3 5LA.

From the Inn front entrance or car park, cross Warrington Road and turn left (1), walk 300 metres and turn right (2) into Fowley Common Lane.

Go straight ahead, avoiding the left hand spur of the lane, and turn right into the narrow footpath at the end of the row of bungalows (3).

Follow the path, avoiding the metal kissing gate on the left, and cross the wooden footbridge (4) (A).

The path continues and comes to a wooden marker post where you take the left turn (5) and heads straight towards the railway line. Turn left in front of the railway track for 40 metres (6) and stop in front of the crossing. (B) Fast moving trains use this line so take extreme care ensuring you look and listen before crossing.

As you approach the farm buildings of Hurst Hall, take the track to the right (7) and after 200 metres, turn sharp left through a large metal gate(8) and continue alongside the farm buildings.

The track bends right and after 0.5km, take the path to the right just inside the hedge, crossing over a concrete bridge (9) (C).

Follow the path until you come to a wide track on a bend where you will see a stile and signpost opposite. (D) Go through the gap to the left of the stile (10) and follow the track. At the end of the track turn right.(11) There is usually a large pile of logs here. Follow the track as it twists and turns. At the end, turn left to bring you out onto Warrington Road by the Chennai restaurant where you turn left. (12)

After 150 metres, cross the road and enter Jennet’s Lane (look for a public footpath sign). Follow the tarmac track crossing the bridge over the River Glaze.

Turn right after crossing the bridge (13) and walk along the track for 0.7km. In front of the Forestry Commission sign (E) turn right and continue for 200 metres. Take the small path off to the right just after the picnic bench.

Cross the rickety stile and follow the track to the railway, veering right alongside it (14) reaching the tunnel on the left.

Go through the tunnel (15) and walk ahead alongside Lightoaks Hall and beyond for 1km, where you will cross a stile and footbridge.

Turn right on to Moss Lane (16) crossing the River Glaze, then right into Hey Shoot Lane (17) returning to the Raven Inn.

The Raven Inn is set in beautiful countryside and to enhance its enjoyment, a number of circular walking routes ranging from 4.5km (2.8 miles)

to 7 km (4.5 miles) have been produced, starting and finishing at the Raven Inn. They largely follow country lanes and public rights of way, where the ground in parts can be uneven, and at times muddy, so stout footwear or walking boots are advised.

The Countryside Code should be observed at all times and dogs should be kept under strict control.

Walkers follow the routes at their own risk and the Raven Inn does not accept any responsibility for personal injury.
